Slovakia - One Of The Country’s Greatest Treasures

Author peter    Category ,

Most people spend their free time in Slovakia on one of three activities: outdoor recreation, arts and culture, and architectural sightseeing. All age groups enjoy all three of these at many different levels - and, at the top level, Slovakia can compare with the best in Europe and the world. With over 55,000 inhabitants, Poprad is one of the most important cities in eastern Slovakia, and one of the country’s more thriving economies, thanks to mountain tourism and foreign investment. The High Tatras National Park north of Poprad, Slovakia’s best-known, attracts the vast majority of Poprad’s visitors. The park offers spectacular access to the small alpine mountains in the summer, and a string of lively ski centres for most of the winter. Towns of interest in the immediate vicinity include Kezmarok, with two Protestant churches (not open every day) a castle rich in regional civil war history and a stately renaissance manor in neighbouring Spisska Bela. One more thing, most towns have historic churches, and many of these have features of special signicance. For those seeking a truly eastern European experience, the centuries-old, still-functioning wooden churches of northeastern Slovakia are one of the country’s greatest treasures, though they are hard to reach.
